Kings queens and pawns; an American woman at the front Mary Roberts Rinehart 9781176753464 Books

Rinehart wasn't just the first woman correspondent to visit the Front during WWI; she was the only one. And she was treated like a king by the Allied brass, who probably saw her as a biddable writer who could plead their case to the American public. In general, she is sympathetic to the Allies; but she also sees that grunt-level soldiers on both sides are much the same, and that war is hell for both. And she provides a glimpse into the immense public-private relief efforts that supported the overtaxed military medical systems.
She also describes two women running a soup kitchen out of a ruined house close behind the front, an experience that clearly served as inspiration for her novel "The Amazing Interlude".

Kings queens and pawns; an American woman at the front Mary Roberts Rinehart 9781176753464 Books Reviews

I never had a chance to read this because I downloaded it to my kindle and then my kindle became corrupted.
A sobering look at World War I behind the lines from a woman's perspective. Rinehart was really there. Her brief sketches of what she saw are often poignant.
I write blog reviews for The Blog Report, but am expanding into reviewing books on the as well.

In 1915, at 38 and with three children, Mar Roberts Rinehart left for Europe (alone) to cover World War I for the Post. She toured Belgium and was received by King Albert, taking his first authorized statement regarding the war since its start. She interviewed Winston Churchill and Queen Mary in England, toured hospitals and the French and English lines. Her collected articles were published in Kings, Queens and Pawns, later on in 1915.

More than this book, I advise everyone to read a biography of Rinehart, Had She but Known A Biography of Mary Roberts Rinehart.
I am fascinated by WWI. If I could go back in time I would have loved to be Mary Roberts Rhinehart. Probably my favorite book this year.
Real insight into the First World War. Mary Roberts Rinehart was not only a wonderful writer, but an amazing person. She is also buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
We just celebrated the anniversary of Arlington National Cemetery...and NPR did a piece on people you wouldn't expect to have been buried in Arlington. One of them was Mary Roberts Rinehart. In the radio piece they mentioned that she had gone to the "front" during WWI by The Saturday Evening Post. This book is a collection of her reports at that time. If you only know her from her mysteries...which are wonderful...you might be impressed by her dispatch writings. And, if you have never read any of her mysteries...pick up "The Man in Lower Ten".
If you are a fan of the mysteries (or comedies) of Mary Roberts Rinehart, be advised that this is NOT one. This is basically a diary about a trip she made to Europe during World War I, and her observations of people and places and events she came across during her time there. So it is a history. It was not what I was expecting, and I was tempted to set it by. I kept reading, however, and found it very interesting. It seems like I've seen so many movies and read so much about World War II, but I really didn't know much about the first world war. It is not history in the sense of it being a researched overview of the war. It is one woman's observations and reactions to what she saw. She is a gifted writer, and though the story doesn't contain any great adventure, it is a moving narrative.
